Making its World Premiere at The Contemporary American Theater Festival in Shepherdstown, West, Virginia, this compelling auto-biographical one man show follows Cody’s journey into uncovering his family’s immigration from Vietnam to America. Adopted by an American soldier and brought to the states as a baby, his mother has no connection to her homeland, leaving Cody with a motivational emptiness. Over the years, Cody searches for untraceable answers, only to come to the grim fantasy depicting his two grandfathers on opposing sides of the Vietnam War. At its core, the play asks, “What does it mean to be Asian American?” The conclusion Cody has found is complicated, but the answer is a message all Americans need to hear.

Did My Grandfather Kill My Grandfather? is a triumph to audiences, with only 20 performances in a 99-seat house, over 2000 tickets were sold for CATF’s 2025 season. Grandfather? is a play that embraces heritage, highlights the struggles of immigrants, champions Americana values, and brings audiences together with a message of inclusion and awareness. Cody is the first West Virginian Playwright to ever be produced at CATF in over 30 years of productions.
